Kondai

Ko-nd-ai, Tamil.

(Noun), hair bun.

From the regal courts where queens adorned their heads with the exquisite "kondai," to the bustling streets where modern-day women embrace its convenience and style, this timeless practice has traversed epochs with grace. After obsessing over the Kondais at our studio for really long, we had no choice but to bring a collection of nose ornaments that are inspired by the hair bun, which marry convenience with bold.

Frequently Asked Questions

01

Where does the name Kondai come from?

Kondai is the Tamil word for the hair bun, worn by South Indian women for generations, often with jasmine threaded through it. The nose pin takes its name and spirit from that form. Something that has always existed and never needed to explain itself.

02

What is the inspiration behind Kondai nose pins?

The South Indian hair bun, worn across generations without ceremony, passed on simply by being present. There is a particular quality to things that have existed that long. They know what they are. The Kondai nose pins carry that into gold, bold, considered pieces that wear the way heritage does when it has always been sure of itself.

03

Are the Kondai pieces something you could reach for every day?

Kondai is designed as a statement, pieces with some presence, for the days that ask for something more. That said, some women reach for their Kondai nose pins every morning without thinking about it. Others save it for occasions. The right piece is always the one that feels like yours.

04

What goes into making a Kondai nose ornament?

Every Kondai piece is crafted in gold in Madras. Where stones are used, they are set by craft jewellers who work specifically at this scale. At the size of nose pins, every detail is visible, and every detail here is considered.

05

Can I come to the studio and try them on?

Yes. Come at your own pace and take as long as you need. If you are not in Madras, a video call appointment works just as well. A conversation with someone who understands nose studs, pays attention to your needs and the right piece for you will find itself.

06

Can I customize a Kondai?

Kondai is a small, considered set of nose pins that came from a specific design language. We've let the collection stay the way it came to us, so customisation doesn't sit within it.

07

How do you look after a Kondai nose ornament?

Give it its own space, a small pouch or the box it came in, away from other pieces. A moist cloth is enough for everyday cleaning.
