Kolam

Ko-lum, Tamil

An art form as old as time, Kolam comprises elaborate, symmetrical traditional designs made in the courtyard of the house, every morning, using rice flour. Every morning, before the dawn breaks, the ladies of the household (in most cases) would wash the courtyard, and then draw immaculate patterns on the wet vaasal as a way to start her day in a state devoid of any thoughts or worries from the day that has already gone by. It is an art form so closely woven into the South Indian households, that its significance sometimes goes unappreciated.

Frequently Asked Questions

01

What is a Kolam?

A kolam is drawn at the entrance of a home each morning, rice flour on a freshly washed threshold, before the day begins. It is symmetrical, often intricate, and gone by afternoon. The next morning, it starts again. It is so much a part of daily life that it is rarely given a second thought, but always noticed.

02

Are the Kolam pieces quiet, or does it make itself known?

Both. The geometry is restrained, the lines considered. But the nose pins catch light in a way that draws the eye, quietly, without asking for it.

03

What goes into making a Kolam nose ornament?

The lines and curves of a kolam, worked into gold. The filigree follows that geometry closely; it is fine, patient work. The surface shifts with light, so the nose studs read a little differently each time.

04

How do the Kolam pieces sit alongside the rest of what Mookuthi makes?

Mookuthi works from things that have always been around us, everyday forms, quiet gestures, familiar rhythms. The Kolam nose pins are one of those things. It belonged here from the start.

05

How do you look after a Kolam nose pin?

Give it its own space to rest, away from other pieces that might scratch the gold. The nose pin has small intermittent spaces, and dust or dirt can settle in. A gentle rinse in warm water every so often, followed by a careful dry, keeps it clear.
